Year 2, Semester 2
Individual Supervised Plan – Coord. Ângela Fernandes
The seminar aims at the development of the PhD student’s autonomy and research skills, the broadening of the scope of references in his/her chosen scientific area, and familiarization with theoretical and methodological bases considered most appropriate for the thesis project.
The syllabus is defined according to the student’s individual work plan so that the nature of the supervision and the wide range of options offered by complementary activities can be best adapted to support the development and appropriateness of the research to be carried out.
Seminar activities include:
- Planning and monitoring by the supervisors, who will discuss with the student the work plan for the semester and the specific issues raised in the course of the research.
- Tutorial orientation by the supervisors of the student’s participation in the activities chosen for this semester, which may include: the supervised participation in a research project of CEC – Center for Comparative Studies; the attendance of a choice of lectures, workshops and/or intensive block seminars; the attendance of an international Summer School.
- Discussion of the dissertation project before a Qualification Board, with reference to a preliminary essay (5000-6000 words) submitted to the board.
The Qualification session consists of the discussion of the essay presented by the PhD student before a Board composed of his/her supervisors, an external evaluator (whenever possible, a member of the PhD-COMP’s External Advisory Committee), and one member of the Directive Board, who will chair. The session lasts between 40 and 45 minutes, and is open to the students and teachers of the doctoral programme.
