Luísa Afonso Soares completed her PhD in 1998, University of Lisbon, in German Literature. She is Associate Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies at the same university.

She is the director of the Department of German Studies and also teaches at the Comparative Studies Programme and the Culture and Communication Programme of the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon.

Her main research interests lie in memory studies, gender studies, film studies, representations of emigration.
