Theorizing Historical Research at the Intersection of Gender and Film/Media Studies
How can the theories developed in the field of gender studies help conceptualize research topics in film and media studies? We will try to answer this question by showing how a few concepts proposed by feminist and queer scholars such as Gayatri Spivak, Iris Marion Young, Judith Butler, Teresa de Lauretis, and Alison Butler, can be put at work in approaching the dilemma of women’s continuing (in)existence in canonical film history. We will analyse the impact of gender positioning on women’s expression in two very different and distant areas, discussing examples drawn from both the early history of film thinking and discourse and the contemporary history of “vidding”—or video remix—practices.
